Let me introduce you to Raimondo, one of the characters from my book.
There are places in the world that are impossible to change, impossible to control. One of them is Barbagia — a land of harsh, beautiful mountains in the very heart of Sardinia. It's where Raimondo was born and raised.

Do you know where the name "Barbagia" actually comes from? A long time ago, the ancient Romans called this area Barbaria — the land of the "barbarians," their word for wild outsiders. Rome's army was one of the most powerful in history, but it never managed to conquer the heart of inland Sardinia. The terrain was too harsh, and the Sardinians simply refused to surrender.

Italiano: "Molto tempo fa, gli antichi Romani chiamarono questa zona Barbaria, cioè la terra dei 'barbari'." English: "A long time ago, the ancient Romans called this area Barbaria — the land of the 'barbarians.'"

To win the war, the Romans even brought in massive war dogs. But the Sardinians did something remarkable: they captured those dogs, began breeding them, and created an entirely new breed — strong, loyal, and unmistakably their own: the pastore fonnese (the Fonni Shepherd).

Raimondo comes from this same proud, unyielding land.

Ci sono luoghi nel mondo che sono impossibili da cambiare o da controllare. Uno di questi luoghi è la Barbagia, una terra di montagne aspre e bellissime, dove Raimondo è nato e cresciuto.

Ma sapete da dove viene il nome "Barbagia"? Molto tempo fa, gli antichi Romani chiamarono questa zona Barbaria, cioè la terra dei "barbari" (gli stranieri selvaggi). L'esercito di Roma era fortissimo, ma non riuscì mai a conquistare il cuore della Sardegna interna. Il territorio era troppo difficile e i sardi non volevano arrendersi.

Per vincere la guerra, i Romani usarono persino dei grandi cani da combattimento. Ma i sardi fecero qualcosa di incredibile: catturarono quei cani, iniziarono ad allevarli e crearono una nuova razza speciale, forte e fedele: il pastore fonnese. Raimondo viene da questa terra fiera e coraggiosa.
